Backing up Nokia 5800 contacts with OVI

Have you ever lost ALL your contacts through methods such as losing your phone, due to act of god, or simply because you have deleted them? Well, I have. 2 weeks ago I was updating my 5800 phone firmware, which requires a phone reboot and a wipe out of the phone settings. Sad to say my phone backup plan failed as I accidentally overwritten it. In the end I was stuck with ZERO contacts collected for nearly 7 years.

Luckily social softwares like messenger and facebook helped alot. But the trouble was to add them one by one, all 200 plus names. Took me 2-3 days to get it.

Now YOU don't have to go through it anymore. Because Nokia provides a free site called OVI.com for nokia customers to upload stuff, most importantly CONTACTS, calenders and notes.

If you haven't already have a Nokia phone, go get one first (hahaha) and go to this website and register.

http://www.ovi.com/services/

Also take note, you MUST put in your handphone number details to get the sync settings to your phone. For malaysia the numbers should start with +6 followed by your handphone number.

eg. for DIGI, +60161231234

Once register, sign in which should be at the top right corner of the website.

Click on the little yellow man at the top left hand corner. Then you must set your device which labeled YOUR DEVICE at left side of the page, somewhere in the middle.

A page will display showing you how to setup your phone settings to sync with OVI. You should receive a SMS and need to save it to your phone. Once done, your OVI account has been setup!

Now how do we sync our phone to OVI? The cheapest way first is through WIFI but easiest way would be through 3G or EDGE connection.

Here are the steps for Nokia 5800

1. Enter Menu> Settings> Connectivity>Data Transfer
2. Select Sync
3. Mark X for contacts, Calendar, Notes (Ovi only supports this three, otherwise you will receive an error message)
4. Select Options>Change active profile
5. Select Ovi.com
6. Select Options>Synchronise

The phone should start uploading to the website and you will receive a note "succesful".

Please check your OVI.com account to see the synchronization was succesful or not.

Any questions you can leave a comment here. Thanks.
